Garden View
Creative Ideas and How-To's

Thanks so much for adding an Imaginative Mural to your home decor. This painting depicts what I would like to see out my studio window. Maybe someday I'll have more time to garden. Until then, it takes less time to paint it than plant it and it's blooms all year long! I do like the serenity and color that a garden scene provides. Garden View is painted in trompe 'l oeil (fool the eye) style which was popularized centuries ago in Europe and is enjoying a resurgence in popularity today. As an artist, I enjoy blending beautiful scenes with faux architectural elements. I try to depict inviting landscapes that will add dramatic interest to a room.

I can imagine this mural in several places in a home or garden chairs place of business. I plan to hang one in my two-story foyer. You know, that huge blank wall that swallows anything you place on it? Hanging it from a stairway can be tricky. Call if you need pointers. A livingroom or dining room are obvious choices for this mural. Garden View is a large mural so it feels like a real window that is light and bright. Treat it as such. Place a small table and chairs in front of it (Fig. 1) or a chaise lounge beside it.
A bedroom would be a great choice providing a colorful scene upon awakening and you don't have to close any drapes for privacy! A finished basement is an area where large expanses of blank walls could benefit immensely from this illusionary window. Commercial uses include lobbies, waiting rooms, conference rooms and offices. Even in a home office, I can imagine a desk in front of the window. If you come up with a use that we haven't mentioned, email us. Wed love to hear your ideas.

garden statueGarden View can probably be added to your existing decor. Think of it as an existing window. You don't have to decorate the inside of a room based on what is outside the window. Of course, some decor will l be better suited than others. The mural contains many colors that can be matched with paint or wallpaper. If using border trim, don't think that you need a floral motif. Many border designs will look good including those that look like architectural trim. You may decide to create border details of your own using stencils and stamps.

You might incorporate into your interior decor a pedestal similar to the one in the painting topped with a plant or sculpture (Fig. 2). Classical accessories like urns, sconces, sculptural artifacts (lots of reproductions exist) would look good in the room and would help tie together the classic architecture of the painting with your existing decor. Some coffee table books on flowers and gardening are pieces of art in themselves and look good left in full view. Open the book to a particularly pretty page and place atop it an exquisitely crafted silk flower. Perhaps you could hang a small collection of botanical prints flanked with glass and iron vase sconces.

Fabrics add warmth and texture to a room. The hardest part is selecting just a few to showcase. Try layering a couple underneath a tea set or porcelain figurines for a living room or bedroom. Your choices include everything from delicate laces to heavy tapestries. Tassels, fringe and beadwork add additional textural interest. If your present furniture lacks interest, add it with pillows, throw blankets and lamp shades. Consider an oddoman adorned with long, thick fringe and tassels.

I could go on and on but I'm sure you will come up with plenty of ideas on your own. We'd love to hear from you. Feel free to call or write with your ideas and results.

Sincerely,
Trish Selgrath
